Getting started
How much does it cost to have my taxes professionally prepared?
Your price depends on how complex your return is — a single W-2 return costs less than a self-employed return with a home office, or an S-corp filing. You'll get a clear, up-front quote before any work begins, so you know exactly what to expect.
Can I file my taxes online without visiting an office?
Yes — EF Taxcodes is fully remote. You upload documents through your private encrypted portal, we prepare and review your return, walk through it with you by phone or video, and e-file with the IRS and your state. We serve clients in all 50 states.
How long does the process take?
It depends on how complex your return is and how quickly your documents arrive. Once everything is in your portal, we prepare your return, review it line by line, and walk through it with you before filing — and you'll get a clear timeline along with your quote. After e-filing, IRS refunds with direct deposit typically arrive within 21 days.
What documents do I need to file my tax return?
Typically: a government-issued photo ID, Social Security numbers (or ITINs) for you and your dependents, your income forms (W-2s, 1099s), and last year's return if you have it. Self-employed filers should also gather income and expense records. When you get started, we send you a personalized checklist so nothing is missed.
Do I need an appointment?
We work by appointment, Monday through Saturday, and everything can be handled remotely by phone or video. The fastest way to get started is the form below — or call 612-438-5458 and we'll set a time that works for you.
Security & credentials
Is it safe to upload my tax documents online?
Yes — when it's done the right way. Your documents go through a private, encrypted client portal that protects your data in transit and at rest. We never accept sensitive documents by email, text, or social media, and we follow the FTC Safeguards Rule and IRS security standards for tax preparers.
What does "IRS-authorized e-file provider" mean?
It means the IRS has accepted our firm into its electronic filing program, allowing us to transmit tax returns directly and securely to the IRS. E-filed returns are processed faster than mailed returns, and refunds with direct deposit typically arrive in less than 21 days.
What is a PTIN, and does my preparer need one?
A PTIN — Preparer Tax Identification Number — is the ID the IRS requires for anyone who is paid to prepare federal tax returns. A preparer without one isn't allowed to charge for tax preparation, so it's a fair first question to ask anyone you're considering. Every EF Taxcodes return is prepared under a registered PTIN.
Special situations
What deductions can I claim if I'm self-employed or a 1099 contractor?
Common deductions include home office expenses, business mileage, supplies and equipment, phone and internet, health insurance premiums, and retirement contributions. The right answer depends on your records and situation — we review your expenses line by line so you claim everything you're entitled to, and nothing you're not.
Can you prepare tax returns for any state?
Yes. We prepare and e-file federal returns and state returns for all 50 states, including multi-state situations — for example if you moved during the year or work across state lines.
Can you fix a past return or file prior years I missed?
Yes. If a past return has an error, we prepare an amended return (Form 1040-X). If you're behind on one or more years, we help you gather what's needed and file them to get you current — usually the first step before anything else can move forward.
What should I do if I get a letter from the IRS?
Don't ignore it — most IRS and state letters have a response deadline, and many are routine. Upload the letter to your secure portal and we'll review what it actually says, explain your options in plain language, and help you prepare the right response.
